The Day Camp at Crystal Pond

Did You Know?

Did you know that The Day Camp of Crystal Pond runs under the Camp Nahaco Commission?  Camp Nahaco, a former Boy Scout property, was bought years ago by the towns of Woodstock and Eastford.  The commission, made up of equal members of Eastford and Woodstock residents, governs the property.  Although both towns technically own the property, no public funding from either town is given to the camp, the commission, the property, or the day camp.

So what does that mean?  For The Day Camp at Crystal Pond, it means that we operate on what we call a "Zero Budget."  Which basically means that everything we do is paid for by camper tuition.  Yes - everything!  This includes supplies for every area (arts and crafts, sports, drama, waterfront, and boating), pay for all of the counselors and other staff, supplies for special events such as hot dog days, Pirates' Day, Birthday Bash, bills for electric, garbage, etc. and so much more - none of that is funded from anywhere other than our parents and the tuition they pay.

This past year we also had some help from generous community donars, groups like - New Alliance/First Niagara Bank, Industrial Pallet, Eastford Building Supply, Whitcraft, the Eastford School PTO, Eastford Republican Town Committee, Eastford Democratic Town Committee, and Citizen's Bank.  Many of these organizations specifically donate towards our Campership Fund, which helps familes facing financial difficulties send their kids to camp.

When I compare our day camp to other area day camps and the tuition they charge, we are the lowest around - and we provide transportation!  It always amazes me that we can remain this competitive when we don't receive any funding - and it's thanks to our amazing parents and campers who return to us every year.  Your support keeps us going - THANK YOU!

Please consider calling your town selectman and encouraging them to begin funding the camp property.  We would like to keep the property going and be able to continue to use it for years to come.  However, without some serious financial backing - and soon - many buildings and areas won't be usable.  There are millions of ways to use the camp - with the help of the citizens of Eastford and Woodstock, so many improvements could be made and enjoyed by everyone.
